1. Topic-
Number Sense & Numeration
Math: Problem solving using Greg Tang's Math Appeal

2. Content-
addition, subtraction, more than, less than, altogether, how much is left over.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.to get them to learn the concept of problem solving
2.to have students use subtraction to add and simplify problems through patterns and symmetries
3.to have a small group of students discover different ways of solving problems, confidently finding what works best for them

4. Objectives-
1.watch to see if they need help. If they don't need any help try moving on to harder problems.
2. observe ways that students demonstrate their learning
3. observe how students explore concepts and assess what level of complexity they will perform procedures

5. Materials and Aids-
1.Greg Tang's Math Appeal, Scholastic Press, New York, 2003
2.Chart Paper & Markers
3.Number Line (created by students)
4.Base 10 Blocks

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Read the Greg Tang's Math Appeal to the students
2.Talk about each problem on the page and discuss the hints that are provided to assess the students understanding of the riddle provided
3.Ask the students if they can "see" another way of solving the problem, discuss as a group

B. Development-

1.Using manipulatives discuss solving problems via patterning and grouping of numbers
2.Show the students an example of solving a problem on the chart paper
3.have the students draw a number line on a separate chart paper to use as needed

C. Practice-

1.Take the first problem in the book and ask the students to solve it together as a group (teacher included)
2.Do one of the problems in the book as a group without teacher assistance/guidance
3.Have students complete one solution on their own and do a teacher check

D. Independent Practice-

1.Observe students solve a problem on their own
2.Have students re-read the problems in the book and choose a riddle to solve

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Remind students to make sure to look for the key words in the problems. How much is left? altogether?
2.Make sure the number line is available to all students reminding students that it is there as an aid that it is OK to utilize the number line if needed
3.Provide extra time to any student as required and offer to clarify any wording to assist in the understanding of the riddle

F. Checking for understanding-

1.make sure that students know how to add using subtraction before they leave. Ask them if they have an misunderstandings or question's about the lesson.
2.Ask if they are comfortable with their understanding of the problems and the solutions
3.Ask students to retell a way that they found the solution to one of the riddles

G. Closure-

1.Reiterate students successes and remind students of success criteria
2.Thank students for their time, and remind them that they helped me learn just as I know through their questions and answers that they have learned something new too.

7. Evaluation-
Use of Anecdotal Notes
