1. Topic-
Geometry

2. Content-
Identifying and Creating Two and Three Dimensional Shapes

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1) Students will be able to identify and create basic two and three dimensional shapes.
2) Students will be able to know basic geometric vocabulary
3) Students will be able to identify parts of three dimensional shapes (edges, corners, faces)

4. Objectives-
Objective: Describe the change in attributes as two- and three-dimensional figures are cut and rearranged.

5. Materials and Aids-
Play Doh
Shape Chart
Two Worksheets

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Ask students to look around the room and find different shapes.
2. Collect or label the different objects that they point out are shapes. Teacher will make sure there are objects that are three dimensional shapes in the collection as well.

B. Development-

1. Teacher will use some of the suggested items around the room and ask the students what they notice about each different object (like size, shape, etc.) Teacher would have students do this with a few different objects.
2. Next, teacher will hold up something that is a square and something that is a cube and ask what is the same and what is different, hopefully students will point out that one is flat and the other is not, or that a square is a side of the cube.
3. Teacher will explain that a square is two dimensional or flat and a cube is three dimensional, and you can actually hold it. Teacher will then explain the difference fully and show the students how the square is a face on the cube. Then explain that three dimensional figures have faces, edges, and corners.
4. Continue to go through the rest of the objects, while going through them ask students if they think it is a two or three dimensional object by quietly putting up two or three fingers, when everyone has answered call on one of the students and ask how they know it is two or three dimensional.

C. Practice-

1. Teacher will pass out play doh to each student, ask students to make a few different two dimensional shapes.
2. Teacher will then break the students into groups of three or four and handout the shape charts. Explain to the students that they will be using their play doh to make one of each of the shapes on the chart, and then as a group the students will fill out the chart using their play doh figures to count faces, edges, and corners. Then they will write down the shape of the faces.
3. Teacher and whole class will the first shape together and fill that part of the chart as a whole class.
4. Teacher will have examples of all six different shapes as a guide for the students when they are making the shapes.

D. Independent Practice-

For independent practice teacher will handout two worksheets, students will work on these if they finish their chart early.

E. Checking for understanding-

1. Teacher will walk around the room while groups are working on the assignment, if there are students whom seem to just be copying their group member's answers, teacher will ask them questions about how they got a specific answer and see if they know or not, if the student seems confused try to take some time to explain to the student in a way that the teacher knows the individual will better understand.
2. The teacher will have the completed worksheets to see in the individual students understand the concept taught.

F. Closure-

1. When all the groups are done, the class will go over the chart together and make sure all answers match.
2. The students will finish their two handouts for homework.
