1. Topic-
2. Content-
Viewing 3 Dimensional Objects and Calculating Surface Area |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Find the Surface Area of a Prism
2. Find the Surface Area of a Cylinder
3. Build 3-D Objects when given views |
4. Objectives-
1. Students will work individually and in groups to take measurements
and determine Surface Area of 3-D Objects.
2. Students will build models or create floor plans for certain living
spaces. |
5. Materials and Aids-
Text books, rulers, tape, cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, and other
objects to measure.
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1. Show video on loading a container ship and architecture(construction).
Have discussion on the importance of Measuring Surface area. |
B. Development-
1. Students begin by creating a driving question about the importance
of measuring surface area in their lives. Example : Should you measure
a Deep Freeze for your basement before you purchase the product? As
a class, we will also brainstorm different jobs where measuring surface
area is important. Finally, we will review fractions and decimals
to help with our measurements and introduce how to calculate surface
area. |
C. Practice-
1. I will begin by measuring different items in the class such as
a computer hard drive and the filing cabinet.
2. I will then ask a couple volunteers to help me measure another
object of their choice.
3. I will also send a few students to measure a book shelf in the
class across the hall and determine if it will fit between the filing
cabinet and the wall.
D. Independent Practice-
1. Rulers and tape measures will be handed out and students will
start be measuring their text books and other books on their desks.
Answers will be compared to ensure understanding. They may also estimate
how many math books they could fit in their desks or kitbags.
2. Students will work with a partner and calculate the surface area
two other objects in the classroom.
3. After showing me their calculations, students will go around the
school and measure two items that are larger.
4. Students will also measure paper towel rolls, Pringle containers
and other cylinders. |
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
Options for the project will vary depending on Adaptations and Modifications
and students can choose from one of the examples or decide on their
own and present it to me before starting.
1. A project for this section will include groups designing a second
floor of the Water front Mall in Summerside where they were planning
on building condos. These projects can be a model, 3-D drawing or
computer generated.
2. Other students may design a floor plan for a Flat or Apartment
in the new Holmons building on Water St in Summerside.
3. Students could also complete a classroom floor plan. |
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Students will be assessed on their group work together and their
understanding of calculating surface area.
2. Also, their projects should give them real life understanding about
surface area. |
G. Closure-
1. Projects will be presented to the class and displayed in the
library.
7. Evaluation-
Students will be assessed on their group work together, their understanding
of calculating surface area and the completion of the projects. |
