3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students to look at a box and draw its net correctly
2.Accurately measure the dimensions of the faces of a prism and round
lengths to nearest centimeter or half of a centimeter
3.Problem solve to determine the cost to make each box, then calculate
the amount of boxes they can purchase with $100. |
4. Objectives-
1.Students should collaborate with group members to work through
steps of the problem solving model
2.Students should clearly communicate thinking and solution steps
in logical organized way
3.Students should demonstrate an understanding of metric units and
surface area and show an ability to solve problems with money
5. Materials and Aids-
- H/O with task and instructions, net templates & communication
organizers
- boxes, scissors, rulers, markers, tape
- manipulatives e.g. link cubes and polyhedrons |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1.Students will be asked to select a box and consider how much it
might cost to make it.
2.They will compare boxes and suggest things that might affect the
cost (size, thickness of material, color design etc.) |
B. Development-
1.Moving on from their answers students will be asked the following
questions.
Could you figure out how much it would cost to make your box? What
things would you need to know?
2.The task and materials will then be assigned for students to work
on in small ability groupings. |
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1.provide pre-drawn nets
2.communication organizers with question prompts to assist working
through the steps
3.simplifying task - e.g. rounding to nearest whole cm rather than
nearest half cm
4.chunking task & using timer to help students stay on track |
F. Closure-
Groups will summarize their work on a small chart to be presented
to the class when completed |
7. Evaluation-
1.Work samples
2.communication organizers |
