1. Topic-
Symmetry

2. Content-
PA Standard for Geometry grade 2, standard 2.9.2B and NCTM national standard for preK-2 Numbers and Operations: Fractions / Symmetry, Shapes, Line of Symmetry, Fractions (half)

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Understand what symmetry is
2.Identify and draw lines of symmetry
3.Understand and recognize the fraction 1/2

4. Objectives-
1.Given a shape, the students will be able to draw at least one of its lines of symmetry with 95% accuracy.
2.Once a line of symmetry is identified, the students will be able to recognize that the shape is cut in half by the line and that 1/2 is the numeric equivalent of one half with 100% accuracy.

5. Materials and Aids-
Paper and pencils, Paper shapes, Interactive whiteboard

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Have the word "symmetry" on the board and ask if anyone has heard it before or thinks they know what it means
2.Try to figure out the definition as a group before teacher explains
3.Introduce the paper shapes and talk about how they look

B. Development-

1.Use the paper shapes to demonstrate symmetry and model how to find the line(s) of symmetry by folding the shapes in half along their lines of symmetry
2.Show images of shapes with their lines of symmetry already drawn

C. Practice-

1.Draw the shapes that are on the board with their lines of symmetry
2.Come up to the board and draw the line of symmetry where you think it should be on the shape

D. Independent Practice-

1.Children take turns drawing lines of symmetry on the board where they think they belong
2.Teacher asks if everyone agrees and the students can check the line of symmetry drawn on the board against their own drawing on their paper

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.If anyone is struggling with finding the line of symmetry or if they are more of a hands-on learner, they can practice folding the paper shapes until they find the line of symmetry

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Ask children to draw shapes and lines of symmetry on their own papers
2.Ask children to draw lines of symmetry on the board
3.Ask class if everyone agrees and if they all drew the same line of symmetry for that shape. If anyone has a different one, they can come up and draw theirs too. Check with class again.

G. Closure-

1.Review what symmetry is
2.Talk about how lines of symmetry break a shape into even halves and how there can be more than one line of symmetry in one shape

7. Evaluation-
1.If students are able to accurately draw and agree upon lines of symmetry, then they have successfully learned the content
