1. Topic-
Using the Pythagorean Theorem |
2. Content-
Pythagorean Theorem: In any right triangle, the sum of the square
of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of
the hypotenuse.
Legs: The sides that form the right angle.
Hypotenuse: Side opposite right angle.
Converse of Pythagorean Theorem: If the sum of the square of the lengths
of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse,
then the triangle is a right triangle. |
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
M08.C-G.2.1.2: Apply the Pythagorean theorem to determine unknown
side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems
in two and three dimensions. (Figures provided for problems in three
dimensions will be consistent with Eligible Content in grade 8 and
below.)
M08.C-G.2.1.1: Apply the converse of the Pythagorean theorem to show
a triangle is a right triangle. |
4. Objectives-
Know- Students will know what the Pythagorean Theorem states.
Understand-Students will understand what is required to use the Pythagorean
Theorem.
Do-Students will be able to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to different
situations. |
5. Materials and Aids-
Transparency with Pythagorean Theorem and Converse examples. |
6. Procedures/Methods-
A. Introduction-
1.Review what Pythagorean Theorem is, see if students know they
require a right triangle.
2.Cover the parts of a right triangle and relate to a,b and c in theorem. |
B. Development-
1.Cover examples on direct application.
2.Cover examples on using converse. |
C. Practice-
The teacher will extend problems to real world situations with a
couple of examples. |
D. Independent Practice-
The teaching assistant will lead partner activity practice on more
problems, getting more difficult. |
Checking for understanding-
1.We will have students lead us through many of the problems
2.We will walk around during partner practice to see comprehension. |
Closure-
We will have a harder exit ticket that students will complete independently. |
7. Evaluation-
1.We will grade the exit tickets for correctness.
