Introduce yard, and choose feet or yards to measure objects and distances between them.

Vocabulary:
distance (the space between 2 things or places)
yard (a unit of length in the customary system, = to 3 ft or 36 inches)
yardstick (a tool used to measure greater lengths in customary units, = to 3 ft)
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Estimate, measure, and compare lengths using customary units.
 
4. Objectives-
Introduce yard, and choose feet or yards to measure objects and distances between them.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
rulers, yardsticks, whole classroom, whiteboard, markers, teacher manual
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Math Center (days in school, date)
2. Introduce vocabulary.
3. Introduce yardstick.
 

B. Development-

1. Compare the yardstick to a ruler.
2. How are they similar and different?
3. Is it better to measure with one over the other?
4. Demonstrate how to measure different objects within the room.
 

C. Practice-

1. Half rows will be given a ruler and yardstick. They are to practice estimating and measuring length to the nearest foot or yard.
2. Are their things longer than 1 yard in the classroom?
3. After 10 minutes, review with the class what they found.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Students will complete pages 485 & 486 on their own.
2. Students will pair up to complete page 487.
3. Students will complete the review page on 488.
 

Checking for understanding-

I will continue to ask students if they have questions. I will walk around and monitor their practice.
 

Closure-

We will review the new vocab they learned. I will ask them to tell me how many inches in a ruler & yardstick. How many rulers in a yardstick? I will ask them about the importance of measuring.
