Money - counting and adding change. Review of tally marks and counting money
 
2. Content-
penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, coins, value, earn, spend, trade, tally mark money value
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will know the value of different coins
2. Students will be able to show different ways to make amounts with coins
3.Students will use skip counting skills to count change.
4. Students will use tally marks to total the "value" of their names.
5. Students will show at least one way to make the value of their names with coins.
 
4. Objectives-
Students will complete several activities to demonstrate their understanding of coin values and skip counting

Students will read a chart assigning a value to each letter of the alphabet. They will find out the value of their own names. They will make tally marks to find the total. They will show at least one way to show that amount with money.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Discuss different ways of paying for school lunch.
2. Discuss uses for money - intro concept of trading
Why do people look at menus? (To see what their choices are and how much each thing costs.)I made a letter menu. I am saying that an A is 1 cent. A b is 2 cents - do you see a pattern here? You are going to find out the value of your name.
 

B. Development-

day 1: Review identification of coins, value of coins, skip counting and correlation to counting money.
1.Demonstrate with my Dog's name.
2. Review how to group tally marks- make the marks for Cooper.
3. Demonstrate using money stickers to show 1 way to make that amount with coins.
 

C. Practice-

1. At seats practice find the cost of the word DANCE
2. Make the tally marks for DANCE
3. Discuss ways to make that amount with change.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Find the value of the letters in their names
2. Make the tally marks for their names.
3. Use coin stickers and show at least one way to make their amounts with money.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Parent volunteers will be in the room to help. Student names with high point value may need help making tally marks and counting the money they need.
Special students will need encouragement and extra supervision
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Product will demonstrate students understanding of use of tally marks and counting money.
 

G. Closure-

1. Write points on index cards - find someone who had the same number of points as you. More or less?
2. Get in line order from lowest to highest number of points
