1. Topic-
Identifying and Constructing Patterns

2. Content-
Pattern: a particular arrangement of things. You can find patterns in song, movements, shapes and colors.
Repeat: When something repeats, it happens again. In a pattern, a color, shape, or sound will repeat in a particular way.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Recognize a pattern

2. Constructing and extending a pattern

3. Predicting what comes next in a pattern

4. Objectives-
1. Sort and describe objects by similar characteristics

2. Create and describe patterns using objects, word and numbers

3.Recognize, replicate, and extend repeating patterns

5. Materials and Aids-
Dr. Jean Tooty Ta Song
Cubes of only two colors
Shape Pattern worksheet

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Show students a picture of a zebra, bee, and a beach umbrella on the board.
Asking them what do the pictures have in common.
Reading the pattern of the picture together asking them what comes next.

I will be addressing different kinds of learners: kinesthetic, visual, auditory

B. Development-

Show examples around the classroom with objects or people.

C. Practice-

Model a pattern of clapping hands, snapping fingers repeating it 3 times. Emphasize that I am doing the same action over and over in the same way. Which is called repeating to make a pattern. Repeat the pattern. Then ask students to show what action comes next and to join in the pattern.

D. Independent Practice-

1. Provide students with a number of blocks, using only two colors

2. Students will build a tower with the blocks making a pattern

3. Students will predict what comes next in color sequence

4. Then do the Shape Pattern worksheet

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Provide student with numerous opportunities to practice finding patterns. Once student had mastered this skill, they can move on to extending and creating patterns of their own.

F. Checking for understanding-

Ask students if they understand, if they don't I will display 4 red and 4 yellow cubes. Asking the student "How can you use these cubes to create your own pattern?" Possible answer: Line up some cubes. Then keep adding the same colors over and over.

G. Closure-

IF the student didn't finish the shape pattern works sheet they will take it home for homework.
