1. Topic-
Constructing patterns ABA,ABB
Recording patterns ABA, ABB
What Comes Next? in a pattern

2. Content-
pattern:it's a pattern because it repeats over and over again

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students construct a pattern ABA, ABB - 2 colors
2.Students record pattern
3. Students complete each others patterns

4. Objectives-
1.Concrete: using link-cubes construct a 2-color pattern
2.Representation: transfer link-cube pattern to grid paper correctly following created pattern
3.Abstract: looking at part of a pattern have the ability to know "what comes next" to continue the pattern

5. Materials and Aids-
Link-cubes class set
Grid paper cut in strips
crayons
tape
dixie cups

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Today we are going to continue our work with patterns. You have been making a lot of interesting two color patterns but we haven't been able to save them. Today we are going to record the patterns that you make with the linker-cubes.

B. Development-

1.Remember a pattern repeats over and over again
match pattern
2.How can we use this cube strip to show my pattern? [student: you can color the strip the same as our cube train.]
3.How can I make sure that I record my pattern correctly? [student:hold it next to paper, work in pairs one says color other records, put cubes on squares and take away as you color the square]

C. Practice-

1.Make a 2-color linker-cube pattern
2.Demonstrate various ways to record
3.Show the beginnings of a pattern and guess as a class 'what comes next'

D. Independent Practice-

1.Student works to create pattern
2.Student records pattern
3.In groups of 2 students play 'what comes next'

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Help students line up linker-cubes to chart strip or break apart train and place them on chart strip to help student 'see' the relationship
2.If student is overwhelmed by recording process let them continue with pattern making until they seem ready to tackle next step
3.Have students work together to make patterns and solve what comes next

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Did the student make a pattern using the linker-cubes?
2.Was the pattern copied to the chart strip?
3.Did the student know "what comes next" ?

G. Closure-

1.Discuss any issues noticed while observing students
2. Share student patterns asking of students to orally identify if it is a pattern and what the pattern is. Why is it not a pattern?
3.Brainstorm ideas to work through when someone makes a non-pattern
4.Explain once more what makes a pattern: repeats over and over again
