Title-
Bookmaking and Journaling
 
Background-
Brief history overview of the history of books and international cultural history related to book making (vocab: slat book, palm leaf book, papyrus, wish scroll, accordian book, sewn books, hard covered books), importance of journaling & reflection. Hands on: creating wish scroll, creating personal journal with reflection sheets contained, binding book with yarn
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Gain basic understanding of the history of book making and the importance of journaling
2. Have hands on experience creating a personal journal and using a basic book binding technique to put the book together
3. Provide a long term project for the students with two grading dates for their journal throughout the rest of the school year.
 
Teacher Objectives-
1.For students to learn through short lecture basic vocabulary about book making and journaling
2.For students to enjoy hands on book making process and long term reflection and journaling project
3.For students to successfully following direction and keep up with their progress on an individual checklist (assessment)
 
Resources-
Laptop, Projector, Powerpoint Presentation, Handouts, Coloring sheets (differentiated lesson), reflection handouts for journals, rubric and checklist, paper, journal covers, yarn, magazines, glue, markers, crayons, colored pencils
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Pass out handouts / explain about note taking and vocabularly
2. Begin with power point presentation on book making and journaling and overview of handouts
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Students will create a "wish scroll" as individuals in a class.
2. Basic directions will be provided for journal project by reading checklist and showing an example
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. Students will begin work on journal covers.
*Level 1 Students: Using checklist with all requirements - drawing contour of hand
*Level 2 Students: (differentiated lesson) - either creating cover of journal completely from magazine cutouts OR coloring in hand coloring sheet and gluing on cover then coloring around it
*Level 3 Students: (differentiated lesson) No journals, studetns will color hand coloring sheets
 

4. Student Practice-

1.Students will take journals with them and will be required to complete a total of 30 drawings in their journal between now and the end of the school year.
2.Teacher will collect journals before Christmas break for "first grade" and then another time at the end of the school year for "second grade"
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

*Level 1 Students: Using checklist with all requirements - drawing contour of hand

*Level 3 Students: (differentiated lesson) No journals, studetns will color hand coloring sheets
 

6. Assessment-

1. Student self assessment - students keep up with their own progress by using a checklist
2. Teacher assessment - Teacher keeps up with each students progress by checklist
3. Grading assessment - Grades will be based on Rubric Grading. Rubrics will be provided to students at beginning of project.
3. Group / Peer assessment: Class critique will be done on "cover art" of journals
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Self knowledge will be gained from journaling and reflection
2. Higher Order Thinking and reflection, self expression, self confidence will be promoted
