1. Students will define words used commonly during informal critique of art
2. Using token response, students will practice expressing their opinion by sorting photographs made by peers
3. Students will develop further understanding of the informal critique process as an influence on valuing art
 
Teacher Objectives-
1. Students will define the meaning of the symbols used in token response
2. Using the symbols, students will sort photographs made by their peers
3. Students will reflect on the token response process as a method for valuing works of art
 
Resources-
Token response cards
Art (photographs) prints
Butcher paper
Markers
On butcher paper, write the check for understanding questions
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Students hang their photos on wall
2. Introduce Token Response sorting cards-students define:

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Select a work of art in the room from last year
2. Pick one token which best defines how I feel about the artwork
3. Define Whey
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. In groups, ask students in turn select one work of art for one token
2. Ask students to give a reason why they labeled the work as such
 

4. Student Practice-

1. At tables, select one final work of art
2. Choose appropriate token
3. Remove all other works of art from the wall, leaving the one work of art up
4. Create a short rationale for your chosen token and artwork
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Allow for students to use more than one token
2. Put blanks out for students to create their own token
3. Students can use their own token for the response
 

6. Assessment-

1. What is the value of classifying photography?
2. Art?
3. What did you learn about your own artwork during this process?
4. How did the process make you feel?
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Share out answers for 3 and 4 from a few students on large butcher paper
2. Discuss goals for the photographs
3. Store photographs
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Students participate during the critique by talking at least once
2. Students reflect as a group by writing thoughts on one sheet of paper
