1. Topic-
|
LINKING BAND STYLES OF MUSIC TO THE WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY. |
|
|
2. Content-
|
Key content areas include: The many different styles of music and
their definitions, using the computer to create a spreadsheet which
involves graphing technique. |
|
|
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1. At the end of the lesson, each student will have a clear idea
that their are many genres of music to appreciate and enjoy.
2. Students will see how it is possible to correlate content across
several subject areas. They will be using music, computer skills,
and math skills to complete this lesson.
|
|
|
4. Objectives-
|
1.By the end of this lesson, 95% of the students will be able to
identify, at least, 20 different genres of music.
2. By the end of the this lesson, each student will successful create
a chart within his/her group using skills learned to chart information
on a spreadsheet.
|
|
|
5. Materials and Aids-
|
1. A copy of the list of different music styles for each student
to have in his/her binder.
2. A copy of the group lesson for every group of 6 students.
3. Colored craft sticks (6 different colors)
4. A computer accessible for each group of students. |
|
|
6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. At the beginning of class, the teacher will stand at the door
holding the craft sticks. As students enter the classroom, each one
will receive one craft stick. The teacher will not tell the students
what the craft stick is for.
2. While students are seated, the teacher will lead the students in
a lively conversation about what types of music they enjoy listening
to.
3. Last, the teacher will ask the students to describe some of the
most common music videos they download off of YouTube. |
|
|
B. Development-
1. Once the introduction is done (roughly 10 minutes), the teacher
will pass out the pages stated, "So Many Different Styles of Music"
2. The teacher will have each student read the word, discuss it, and
describe it. If the student does not know the term, other students
will be encouraged to help. Finally, if the entire class is unaware
of the style of music, the teacher will define it for them.
3. Once this is done, the students will be grouped according to their
craft stick color.
4. Each group will have the "YouTube" spreadsheet assignment to work
on. They will have a hard copy for practice, and there will also be
one available at their computer station online. |
|
|
C. Practice-
1. Students will look over the numerous styles of music, and collectively
decide which type their particular group listens to the most whenever
they download YouTube songs.
2. Part #2 of their spreadsheet assignment involves the students in
the group ranking 6 different styles of music.
3. Students must use the summation computer tools to compile their
results. The teacher will walk around from group to group and personally
show them how to do this. Once the teacher sets the example, the students
are on their own to try their new computer skill.
4. Based on their results, students will plot their information onto
the graph.
5. Each group will share their results with the rest of the class. |
|
|
D. Independent Practice-
1. Each student must select one style of music unfamiliar to him
or her to do research on at home. This style of music can be expressed
in 2 to 3 paragraphs, which will be due the next day.
2. All graphs and spreadsheet group work projects will be assessed
two ways: the teacher will give one grade to the entire group based
on rubrics, and the students will have an opportunity to grade each
other within the group based on cooperation, attentiveness, and equal
team responsibility to the task at hand.
3. |
|
|
E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
1. Peer mediation will be utilized.
2. As long as those needing differentiated instruction try his or
her best; he or she will succeed
3. The teacher will be at hand to provide one-on-one help and guidance. |
|
|
F. Checking for understanding-
1. Submission of group project.
2. Submission of individual reports.
3. Peer evaluations. |
|
|
G. Closure-
1. How did this activity help our band to get to know each other
better?
2. What kind of music does this particular class prefer?
3. Describe other ways we can tie technology with band class? |
|
|
7. Evaluation-
|
1. Were the students on task?
2. Did they seem to enjoy this lesson?
3. Will they be more responsive to learning numerous genres of music
in band class as we progress through the year?
4. Will we be able to tie computers into our band program more frequently? |
