Basic rhythmic symbols in music

The lesson will cover:

Whole note
Half note
Quarter note
Eighth note
Sixteenth note
Stems connecting notes
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. The students will have an basic knowledge of rhythmic music theory
4. Objectives-
1. The students will be able to define all of the terms listed in the content section.
2. The students will be able to draw any of the discussed notes from memory
5. Materials and Aids-
SmartBoard and accompanying accoutrements
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Announce the topic

B. Development-

Explain what a "beat" is, how the different notes fit into them. Show what each of the notes looks like and how they're verbally counted.

C. Practice-

Find the beat to a few song clips.

Clap along to basic rhythms.

D. Independent Practice-

Draw notes on paper.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

If students have questions, I'll explain using various different concepts - fractions are a good one.

F. Checking for understanding-

Check to make sure students are drawing the notes correctly

G. Closure-

Summarize, announce what's to come.
7. Evaluation-
Have students come up to the board and draw different notes.
