1. Topic-
Learning geometric shapes through sorting and singing

2. Content-
Plane and solid geometric shapes (circle, squares, triangles, rectangles)

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Virginia Standard of Learning
Music - Aesthetics
K.12 The student will recognize the relationships between music and other disciplines.

Math - Geometry
K.11 The student will identify, describe, and draw two-dimensional (plane) geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle).

4. Objectives-
Identify a circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.
Describe the properties of triangles, squares, and rectangles, including number of sides and number of corners.
Describe a circle, rectangle, triangle, and square.
Draw a circle, triangle, square, and rectangle.

5. Materials and Aids-
Promethian
Cut out shapes with different colored construction paper.
20 of each:
yellow circles
blue triangle
red rectangle
orange square
20 sets of solid wooden geometric shapes
Recording:
Song: Sing to the Hokey Pokey Song

Put your circle in, put your circle out put your circle in and you shake it all about,
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what it's all about.

Put your rectangle in your rectangle out, put your rectangle in and you shake it all about,
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what's it's all about.

Put your triangle in put your triangle out put your triangle in and you shake it all about,
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around, that's what's it's all about.

Put your square in put your square out, put your square in and shake it all about, You do the Hokey Pokey and turn yourself around, that's what's it's all about.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Explain to students they will learn a song and when they hear the name of the shape they will have find the shape and do what the song says.
2.Introduce students to the geometric figures, using one geometric figure at a time.
3.Display one shape at a time on the promethean board.

B. Development-

1.Let students take turns naming characteristics of the figure.
Rectangle - (It has four sides, two long and two short. It has four square corners.)
Square - ("It has four equal sides." "It has four corners.")
Triangle - ("It has three sides." "It has three corners.")
Circle - ("It is round." "It has no sides.")

C. Practice-

1.Introduce vocabulary, write words next to shapes on the promethean board and add to math word wall.
2.Discuss similarities and differences.
3.Hold up a solid geometric figure and point to the face and explain what a face is.
Ask students to predict which figure will roll and which figure will slide.
4.Play recording of the "Hokey Pokey" song with the words on the Promethean board.
5.Have students practice singing the words while putting their shapes in the air.

D. Independent Practice-

1.Ask students to build something with their shapes.
2.Ask student which shape is easier to build with.
3.Hand out a blank sheet of paper divided into four spaces.
4.Ask students to draw one geometric shape in each space.
5.Ask student to match solid figures with the drawings.
6.Place students in groups of four.
7.Allow each student to find something in the class that represents each shape.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Repeat activities and plan time for exploration.
2.Increase concreteness.
3.Move from easy to more difficult, shorter to longer.
4.Repeat activities and plan time for exploration.
5.Use more hands-on activities for those lacking verbal skills.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.classroom discussion, note whether students can describe the features of a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle.
2.Observe which students are able to locate geometric figures in the classroom.
3.Distribute a paper to each student with multiple examples of various geometric figures drawn on it in random arrangement. Have the students select a particular figure to color. Assign a color for students' selected figure, and have the students color with the assigned color all the examples of that figure found on their paper. Then repeat the process several times, each time with a different figure and a different color.

G. Closure-

1.Review the vocabulary.
2.Have students form a circle with the shapes in front of them.
3.Remind students to follow the words on the song.

7. Evaluation-
1.As the song plays observe whether the student is following the direction and placing the correct geometric figure in the circle.
2.Evaluate drawings
