Subject: Exploring Music
1. Topic-
This lesson provides students with the opportunity to think about the music in their lives, past and present. It encourages them to distinguish between "music" that they listen to and "music-making." It asks them to imagine how music could be in their lives in the future, if they choose, both making and experiencing it.
 
2. Content-
Standard 3- Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
Standard 4- Composing and arranging within specific guidelines.
Standard 9- Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Students will begin to form a definition for music.
2.Students will begin to reflect on the role that music plays in their lives(past,present,future)
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will demonstrate their musical introduction.
2.Students will generate ideas working in pairs.
3. Students will begin to form a definition of music.
4. Students will thoughtfully fill out the sheet about the music in their lives.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Room for students to work in small groups.
DVD Player and monitor.
DVD cued to chapter 3
Journal/worksheet
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Gather students together and announce that you will be exploring their own personal music past, present, future.
2. Show chapter 3 of the DVD.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS-
What is music?
How is music relative to your life?
What kind of music did I experience when I was little?
 

B. Development-

1. Help students gather information about their own musical lives.
2. Use the included worksheet.
3. Demonstrate how to fill out the worksheet.
 

C. Practice-

1. Give students at least 20 minutes to fill out their past, present, future page. They may work in pairs if they wish.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will take their work home and interview at least one adult to answer the following question;

What kind of music did I experience when I was little?
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Review interview results.
2. Review past, present, future
papers.

 

E. Closure-

1. Gather back together and ask some of the students to share some of what they wrote.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Students will share their musical worksheets.

2. Journal entries will be evaluated
