Rhythm & Patterns
 
2. Content-
Students have been working on creating patterns with music and sound. Students will now begin to recognize patterns and rhythm through dance and movement.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will appreciate end enjoy performing dance movements created by their peers
2. Students will participate in a variety of movements and dance actions
3. Students will understand that patterns can be found in music and dance
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will listen to a piece of music and see how their body naturally responds (natural movements to music) fast slow etc.
2. Students will watch as a peer creates 2 or more dance movements that correspond to a particular song.
3. Students will identify these dance movements.
4. Students will practice these movements to the music in a fun and enjoyable way.
5. Students will repeat the dance movements creating a "dance pattern".
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Materials:
Cd player
Warm up activity box
Music CD
Stage
Blank circle
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students will enter the music room and sit in a circle, 2-3 warm up songs will be chosen by the students and performed as a class.
2. The lead teacher will begin a discussion about patterns found in music, a few examples will be given.
3. The teacher will ask students if patterns can be found in dance- the "Chicken Dance" will be used as an example.
 

B. Development-

1. Students will have an opportunity to practice the Chicken Dance and make observations about why this dance involves patterns.
2. A piece of music will be played for students and students will be asked how the music makes their body want to move (slow, fast etc.).
3. A student will be asked to perform some dance movements to the music (teachers and aides will model and promote good audience skills).
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will be encouraged to identify 2 -3 of the movements that the student performed.
2. How to create a dance pattern will be discussed.
3. All students will have the opportunity to take practice the pattern dance.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Activity is to be repeated 2 or 3 times to different types of music.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Use of pic syms for students who require them.
2. Use of the prompt hierarchy for students who need assistance participating.
3.Use of hand over hand for students who need assistance.
4. Use of songs and mantras for classroom management and routines.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Teachers will observe student interaction and participation.
2. Several leaded questions will be posed to students.
3. Antedotal notes will be created for this activity.
 

G. Closure-

1. Students will return to the black circle for closing.
2. Students will review the concepts of the activity (movements, slow, fast, patterns).
 
7. Evaluation-
Direct teacher observation.
