Subject: musical staff game
1. Topic-
learning the musical staff through a fun and attention grabbing game.
 
2. Content-
Benchmark MU.A.3.2.1: The student sight reads simple melodies from standard notation on the treble clef;
Benchmark MU.D.2.2.2: The student uses specific criteria to identify strengths and weaknesses and to make suggestions for changes in his or her own and in others' performances.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.establish knowledge of the staff
2. distinguish the difference between lines and spaces
3.name the lines and spaces
 
4. Objectives-
1.help with hand eye coordination
 
5. Materials and Aids-
bean bags, markers, tape and large staff

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. good morning 3rd grade, last week we talked about the treble and bass clef signs and now we will be learning how to name different notes on the treble cleff
2.divide class into two groups of students
3.explain that they will be tossing the bean bag onto the staff and that they cannot help their teammates, both teams will begin at the same time and the first team to earn ten points first wins
3. winning team gets a treat
 

B. Development-

1. help get a quick grasp on the notes of the staff
2. have them begin to quickly recognize the different notes.
 

C. Practice-

1. point to lines and spaces on the board and have each student identify them
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. pass out staff paper with a note bank and have students label the notes on the staff
2. write notes on the staff and have a blank line underneath for them to identify the notes with.
 

E. Checking for understanding-

1. have a quick quiz at the end of the week to evaluate progress
 

F. Closure-

1. move on to sharps and flats and discuss how they interact with one another ( next couple weeks)
 
7. Evaluation-
1.test them at end of first lesson to see how long it takes them to identify ten notes, then at the end of the year re test them to show time progress.
