Background-
Standard 2: COGNITIVE CONCEPTS: Understand movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities

Students will learn how to dribble a basketball and how to accomplish a basic pass. Passes include: bounce, chest, and over the head.
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Students will feel more comfortable dribbling and passing.
2. Students will try to protect the ball while dribbling.
3. Students will get an idea of how to play basketball.
 
Teacher Objectives-
Students will:
1. To practice dribbling.
2. To work on different types of passes.

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. As students enter the gym, they will begin by doing warm ups. Each student will obtain a basketball and begin to dribble around the court.
2. After they dribble the ball around the court, they will begin doing stretches.
3. Lastly, they will obtain a basketball and dribble from baseline to baseline three times.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

Teacher will:
1. Demonstrate how to properly dribble a basketball; keeping the ball low and having eyes up at the basket.
2. Show students how to protect the ball while standing in place. Keep the ball low and protect the ball with their other arm. (arm bar)
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. On the signal, students will dribble the ball up the court with their right hand and back down the court with their left hand. (encourage students to look at the basket while dribbling)
2. Teacher will set-up cones in a zig zag formation with approximately three to four feet distance in between. Students will be practicing their change of direction while dribbling and make sure they do not hit the cones.
3. Students will dribble the ball in place and using their free hand as an arm bar. (protecting the ball)
4. Student will pair up with a classmate and practice passing. (bounce, chest, and over the head)
 

4. Student Practice-

1. Ask students to dribble outside of class for five minutes a day practicing looking up and protecting the ball with their arm bar.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Encourage student(s) to try his/her best and dribble or pass as best they can.
 

6. Assessment-

1. Assess students while they are doing drills to see if they are doing it properly. If they aren't, teacher will encourage them and explain how to do it properly.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Ask students to identify the types of passes they learned.
2. Ask students where there eyes should be when they are dribbling the ball.
3. Praise students for participating and tell them they did a good job.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. After practicing these skills for a couple days, evaluate their level of comfortability with the basketball.
2. Check if they are dribbling with their eyes up and protecting the ball.
3. Are they participating in the activities and drills?
