Backsaver Sit-and-Reach: FITNESSGRAM Assessment Test
 
Objectives-
1. Students will be able to identify flexibility as the range of motion of a joint.
2. Students will be able to provide three ways to improve flexibility characterized through performing three different stretches of their choice.
3. Students will be able to the perform the FITNESSGRAM Backsaver Sit-and-Reach successfully characterized by siting with a straight leg reaching forward to the point of slight discomfort.
4. Students will be able to reach to a specified distance on the right and left sides of the body characterized by healthy fitness zones assessed in the rubric.

Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce educators and explain the sit-and-reach test.
2. Provide information on the activities and the important cues to successfully participate.
3. Hand out the worksheets in the beginning of class.
 

B. Development-

1. Have the two activities continuously playing while taking two students at a time to perform the sit-and-reach test.
2. The first activity will include the stretching worksheet provided to the students. All the students will participate in this activity for 3 minutes.
3. The second activity will be for the remaining time of the period and will include alternating yoga exercise stations. The last station will include the sit-and-reach box.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. The students will bring the worksheets home and continue practicing flexibility.
2. The students will be circling the stretches they participate in daily during the first activity.
 

Closure-

1. Place students in a U-shaped formation.
2. What types of stretches did you like best today?
3. What is good about being flexible?
4. What other activities can incorporate the use of flexibility?
5. Did everyone enjoy class today?
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Ask students how they could use yoga to help maintain health-related fitness.
2. Ask students to explain how yoga can help increase flexibility.
3. Have students tell you how many days per week they perform flexibility activities.
4. Have students name a flexibility activity that they could do every day.
5. Collect the homework sheet and lead a class discussion on the activities circled and added.
6. Have students discuss their favorite flexibility activity with the class.
