Grade: 4th
Subject: Science
Title-
How do animals' body parts help them meet their need?

Background-
Investigating Bird Beaks and Food

Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Students will be able to understand how body part adaptations help animals (in this case birds).
2. Students will be able to understand how to collect data and discuss their conclusions with peers.

Teacher Objectives-
1. Students will be able to use these beak models to better understand how a variety of real birds use their beaks to eat.
2. Students will be able to observe & infer data about these "beaks" and foods.
3. Students will draw conclusions about the "beaks" and food, and express that to the class.

Resources-
Variety of foods
Different "bird beak" tools
Worksheet about "bird beaks" and food.
Observation Sheet

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Review Chapter 2, Lesson 1
- needs of animals
2. Go Over part of Lesson 2
-meaning of adaptations
3. Introduce what we will be doing an investigation about bird beaks and food
- break up into groups of 5-6

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Explain that the tools represent a variety of bird beaks.
2. And the food is of course, "bird food"
3. There are 4 food/ beak stations. 2 are the same. As a group, you will visit 2 stations.
- at the station everyone will use a "beak" tool to try and pick up and "eat" the food

3. Guided Practice-

1. Groups will visit each (2) stations for about 5-10 min. using the tools ("beaks")and eating the food.
-use the Obsercation sheet to record what it was like using each tool for the different foods

4. Student Practice-

1. Draw conclusions, using their Observation sheets, students will (independently) jot down notes (take about 10 min) about what "beaks" picked up what foods best, and which did not pick up so easily.
2. Afterwards, discuss this w group members.

5. Learner Accommodations-

None necessary.

6. Assessment-

1. Groups will discuss what they thought about several of the tools & foods (their top favorites and not favorites)
2. Then each student will independently work on a worksheet about this activity (bird beaks as tools and the food they eat)

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Go over how these tools modeled actual bird beak adaptations and how it helps those birds to eat their food so they can survive (fullfilling basic need)
2. These models showed us what it is liek to be a bird trying to live & eat!

Measuring Student Progress-
1. Complete the required homework essay.
