Grade: 12
Subject: Chemistry
Title-
How is matter classified?

Background-
Classifying matter: Mixtures, pure substances, homogeneous mixture, heterogeneous mixture, elements, and compounds.

Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Students will distinguish between pure substances and mixtures at the particle level.
2. Classify mixtures as heterogeneous or homogeneous.
3. Distinguish among atoms, elements, and compounds.
4. Explain how compounds can be different from mixtures.

Teacher Objectives-
1. Students will be engaged in discussion and class participation.
2. Students will show understanding through graphic organizers and concept review questions.
3. Students will complete an "exit slip" when lesson is finished for further review and understanding.

Resources-
Textbook, graphic organizer, white boards.

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. The lesson will begin with a quick review or bell ringer. We will review concepts of matter we have been learning such as: heat, changes of matter, states of matter, and atoms.
2. The review will lead into today's lesson of classifying matter.

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Class will be lead through lecture that follows the text. While reading through the text, as a class, we will fill in graphic organizers and note take in personal notebooks.
2. The graphic organizer breaks down the relationship among classifications of matter and how the are related to one another.
3. Concept review is done half way through the lesson which is done on individual white boards.

3. Guided Practice-

1. Hierarchy graphic organizer will be used to identify the relationship of matter and how it is classified.
2. Concept review will be done informally on white boards as group activity.
3. Exit slip given at the end of class will monitor learning of the lesson.

4. Student Practice-

1. Each student has a chemistry notebook where daily notes are checked.
2. The section review will be completed in these notebooks which can be done individually or with assistance.

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Certain students are allowed to work independently on classroom assignments. Participation and understanding are then monitored through a one on one approach at the end of the lesson. This student will also complete an exit slip (written or orally).
2. Lecture is infused with the text book, graphic organizers, discussion, and modeling of discussion on board in written format.
3. The teacher assistant will work with individuals who need extra assistance. During lecture, the TA will provide individual support of either reading or writing in notes and graphic organizer.

6. Assessment-

1. Students are continually monitored informally by concept checking and class discussion.
2. Student notebooks are collected after class to check for note taking consistency and understanding.

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Students will complete an exit slip accounting for what they learned during the lesson.

Measuring Student Progress-
1. Self-reflection is monitored by student participation, exit slip information and conversation with my assistant.
