Grade: 5th
Subject: Science
Title-
Making a Cloud

Background-
~ Air cools as it rises, and its water vapor condenses to form clouds.

~convection- when rising warm air carries water vapor up from the earth's surface.

~Condense- to change from a liquid to a gas.

~Water vapor can only condense if it has something to condense on such as particles in the air: dust, soot or pollen.

~Cloud Formation- when enough water vapor condenses.

Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Students will understand the process of how a cloud is formed.

2. Students will observe the creation of a cloud in the classroom.

Teacher Objectives-
1.Students will observe a cloud forming in a jar of hot water.

2. Students will describe the formation of a cloud.

3. Students will infer how clouds form in nature.

Resources-
-glass jar with lid
-very hot tap water
-small ziploc with ice cubes in it

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1.Remind students that by breathing on a mirror, they can make a little "cloud" on the mirror.
How does this happen? (Their warm breath is cooled by the mirror)
Then water vapor in that cooled air turns to liquid water and the tiny droplets make the mirror cloudy.

2.*Does this give you a clue as to how a cloud in the sky is made?

2. Lesson Progression-

1.~ Air cools as it rises, and its water vapor condenses to form clouds.

3. Guided Practice-

1.Experiment-Make the cloud

2. What happens to the water vapor in the jar? (As the water vapor gets farther from the heat source it begins to cool.

3.What happems to the water vapor as it rises high in the jar? (It forms water droplets on the underside of the lid.

4. Student Practice-

1.Making a cloud activty sheet

5. Learner Accommodations-

1.Individual help will be given by the teacher on a need be basis.

6. Assessment-

1. Cloud activity sheet

7. Lesson Closure-

1.Cloud Word search with completion sentences

Measuring Student Progress-
1. Illustration of how clouds are created.
2.
