Grade: 6
Subject: Science
Title-
Metamorphosis of a silkworm

Background-
-Different stages of metamorphosis
-Vocabulary: direct development, metamorphosis, complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis, egg, larva, nymph, adult, moult, cocoon

Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. Discover animals that metamorphose
2. Learn the different stages of metamorphosis

Teacher Objectives-
1. Use information and communications technologies to illustrate different stages in the metamorphosis of a silkworm
2. To adopt effective work methods
3. To communicate appropriately in a respect manner and using scientific language

Resources-
Silkworm information files

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. Present the students with sequencing cards of a human's growth pattern to be organized quickly as a class.
2. Follow this by comparing the human growth pattern to that of another animal (for example a frog).
3. Ask the students to list some visual differences between the two growth patterns, leading discussion to the knowledge that some animals continue to change body forms as they grow, which is called metamorphosis.

2. Lesson Progression-

1. The students will copy notes on the different growth patterns of animals. (Direct development, complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis)
2. Now the class will magnify in on one animal - silkworm. Each student will receive a silkworm information folder, which they'll have a few minutes to flip through themselves.
3. Point out to the students how the folders and the activity will work. Demonstrate how the list of questions can be answers by find the appropriate information cards to look in. Have glossary books for students to look up key words in.

3. Guided Practice-

1. The class will begin by reading through the information together.
2. The students will answers the questions on their own then get into groups of two to share their answers.
3. The class will come back together as a whole and share the answers they have found.

4. Student Practice-

1. Questions will be assigned to be completed as homework.
2. A worksheet will be assigned to be completed as homework that focuses on the sequence of the economic production of silk.

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Each student has their own folder for class work and easy homework access so they can at their own pace.
2. The information is simplified to only include relevant information to answering the questions and has been broken up into sections for small reading instead of paragraphs of text.
3. Students will have the opportunity to move around and discuss with this type of desk-work by allowing them to go look up keywords at a set station and having a think-pair-share approach.

6. Assessment-

1. The questions the students are answering will be graded for correct answers.

7. Lesson Closure-

1. The students will get into pairs and share one new thing they have learned in today's lesson.
2. A few students can share with the class what they said they learned in today's lesson.

Measuring Student Progress-
1. Collect and correct questions and sequencing cards.
