1. Topic-
Soil

2. Content-
Comparing Soil

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Understand the differences in soils.

4. Objectives-
The student will know the natural world includes soil and be able to observe and describe the differences in soil samples.

5. Materials and Aids-
Soil samples: sand, loam, and clay; cups; paper plates; pencil; My Observations About Soil Worksheet.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Talk about observing sand yesterday.
2.Talk about the characteristics we used yesterday.

B. Development-

1. Ask questions about soil...if they are the same or different.
2. Talk about some describing words.
3. Explain the experiment and go over things to do and not to do.

C. Practice-

1. I will have a few students model with me how to handle the soil.
2. I will do a couple of the chart sections with them aloud.

D. Independent Practice-

1. The students will go to their desks and begin working with the experiment.
2. They will use the chart worksheet to input their data.
3. I will talk with the groups about their findings.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Putting visual pictures on the worksheet for them to guide them as to what to write in the chart.
2. For higher students have them write at the bottom some uses for soil and write in their science journal about their findings.
3. Make a picture book of the different soils they experimented with.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Verbal understanding
2. Written understanding

G. Closure-

Review with the class what they found while doing the experiment.

7. Evaluation-
Review the worksheets and determine who will need further help with understanding soil differences.
