1. Topic-
Oceans and Land

2. Content-
ocean levels, ocean, land,

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Summarize the effects of oceans on land.
2.Students will be able to apply the activity to real life connections
3.Applying vocabulary prior to their knowledge

4. Objectives-
1.Summarize the effects of oceans on land.
2.How oceans affect land
3. Students will see how rising ocean levels affect land using clay model and water.

5. Materials and Aids-
2 cups of clay per group, 2 liters of water per group, 1 aluminum or plastic tray per group,1 2-liter soda bottle per group, 300ml of sand per group, 2 soda straws per group, 1/4 cup of small rocks per group, and toothpicks,

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Set up a demonstration showing how rising ocean levels affect land.

B. Development-

1.Ask students if they know how rising ocean levels affect land
2. Show a diagram of rising ocean levels affecting land
3. Prepare for activity!

C. Practice-

1.Flatten the clay into a small mound in the tray making sure there are some flat edges (represents land)
2.Add some of the water to the tray so that only the edges of the clay (land) are covered.
3.Set the scene: Explain to the students that our climate changes and warms which means more water in the oceans. Make predictions! Will land get covered?

D. Independent Practice-

Building Your Beach Model.
(Instructions are attached to this lesson plan)

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Give students picture vocabulary and student vocabulary cards.

F. Checking for understanding-

I will be doing an informal assessment where I check for understanding throughout the activity, pausing every few minutes to see whether students are following along with the lesson by identifying gaps in comprehension.

G. Closure-

Have students collect data from newspapers or online weather sources, and create a weather map depicting the day's weather in various cities using a country of their choice. Discuss why the weather may differ in various areas. Remind students that the ocean plays a role in regulating weather around the world, even in cities or countries that are not on the coast. Oceans absorb heat from sunlight and then through the movement of ocean currents transport that heat around the world.

7. Evaluation-
1. I will be doing an informal assessment where I check for understanding throughout the activity, pausing every few minutes to see whether students are following along with the lesson by identifying gaps in comprehension.

2. The homework assignment listed above in the closure section will be checked and graded.

8. Teacher Reflection-
This is a very timely activity but even so, if students stay on task and follow the procedures step by step, they will see how fun and educating this activity can really be.
