Understanding the Solar System. Key Vocabulary: Space, Orbit, Sun, Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
The students will gain an understanding of the planets and the Solar System.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students will demonstrate an understanding that there are objects other than the Sun in Solar System.
2.Students will identify two planets and a characteristic of each planet.
3.Students will identify the Earth as the planet they live on.
4.Students will identify the Sun as the mass that all the planets orbit around.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Pre-made paper mache planets and solar system scene.
Pre-made planet cutouts and informative information.
Flashlights.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Students will attend during lecture and "journey into space".
2.Students will point to and/or otherwise indicate planet names and characteristics of the planets.
3.Students will participate in active "orbit" activity.
 

Practice-

Students will be a part of future class presentations on the Solar System.
 

Independent Practice-

Students will complete solar system homework assignment.
 

Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Angel will use an augmentative communication device to participate throughout lesson and assessments.
 

Checking for understanding-

Students will partake in short assessment to monitor their understanding of lesson objectives.
 

Closure-

Students will review assessment answers as a group and be given an opportunity to correctly answer any missed questions.
