1. Listen to Volcanoes on tape.
2. Compare & Contrast volcanoes and fireworks.
3. Review vocabulary words.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Use motions with vocabulary words.
2. Actively listen to story and answer questions.
3.Correctly fill in Venn diagram with volcanoes and fireworks.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Reading textbook, CD player and CD, Venn diagram, Elmo, and pencils.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Go over "Words with Motions". These are the vocabulary words with motions the students made up on Monday. We do this every week.
 

B. Development-

1. Words With Motions
2. Listen to Volcanoes on CD
3. Fill in graphic organizer with partner
4. Go around and ask each group what they put down
5. Closure activity (KWL chart from yesterday)
6. End of whole group reading and move to small group and centers.
 

C. Practice-

The students will work in pairs to fill in the graphic organizer.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Next class I will give workbook page 147 to monitor student progress.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

I pair students based on ability. I have one lower performing student with a higher performing one. I believe this helps with partner work.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Call on each group and write their answers on the board to assess students knowledge.
2. Weekly Selection Test.
3. Workbook page 147
 

G. Closure-

Go over KWL chart from the day before to see what the students learned about volcanoes from the story.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Weekly Selection Test to be taken next Tuesday.
2. There will be several times throughout the year where the students will use this skill. We use Venn Diagrams when comparing and contrasting in many different subjects.
