1. To provide the students with the opportunity to learn about natural disasters from real life narratives.
2. To facilitate the production of digital stories through the use of the Flip Video cameras.
3. To guide students in the production of the video in order to teach others about natural disasters.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Students teach others with digital storytelling.
2. Students teach others about natural disasters through real life narratives.
3. Students learn about how to prepare for a natural disaster.
4. Students learn the repercussions of a natural disaster.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Flip video cameras, people who have experienced natural disasters, survey framework, iMovie to download and edit video
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Show clips of the disaster in Japan
2. Discuss the steps that are being taken for the people.
3. Show "Learn From My Stories" project that blends documentary interviews with individual stories.
 

B. Development-

1. Discuss and show pictures placed into iMovie from my own experience of a tornado.
2. Explain the minutes before, during and after the tornado.
3. Show an Internet demonstration of a tornado passing through a town.
 

C. Practice-

1. Have the students begin searching for natural disasters on the computer, resource materials, etc.
2. Begin brainstorming the types of natural disasters that occur in the Kansas area.
3. Discuss stories that the students have heard from family and friends about natural disasters.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. Have the students discuss natural disasters with family members.
2. Be prepared to share information with class.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. Peer partnerships to assist with natural disaster research.
2. Send explanation of assignment on paper home with students.
3. Proximity for better viewing of presentation
 

F. Checking for understanding-

G. Closure-

1. Wrap Up Day 1: Have students fill out an exit card about today's information.
