1. Topic-
Animal Classification-Readers Theater

2. Content-
Students will learn about the different character traits of animals through reading plays about the different types of animals.(Mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, birds, and fish.)

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.To teach students about the different classifications of animals.
2.To teach students about the different characteristics of each type of animal.
3.To use a cross curricular style of learning.

4. Objectives-
1.Students will be able to learn about the important character traits of animals while reading a play.
2.Students will be able to learn how to read a play using science.
3.Students will be able to classify animals by their specific characteristics.

5. Materials and Aids-
Animal classification posters, the readers theater plays for each classification, the animal classification cards, sharpened pencils, scissors, stapler.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.I will begin by using the students prior knowledge from Mondays lesson on the animals and their traits, using doughnut maps.
2.I will then hang the animal posters we used on Monday next to each map for comparison.
3. We will then reflect on the maps and the doughnuts to see how well they compare to each other.
3.

B. Development-

1.I will discuss the goals of this lesson and why it is important that we know how to classify animals.
2.I will introduce the Readers Theater pages, discuss their task,, and put students into pairs to read the play.
3. I will introduce the animal classification cards, and discuss the task.
4. I will demonstrate how to identify the characteristics of the animals.
5.Students will write on their character cards while I demonstrate on the ELMO.

C. Practice-

1.Students will work with their partner and complete the rest of the character cards (as I previously modeled)
2.After a set amount of time, I will reconvene with the class to discuss what the student pairs cam up with for their second card.
3. Students will share their findings and add to their cards if needed.

D. Independent Practice-

1Students will Think, Pair, Share with their partner to complete the rest of the characteristic cards.
2.Students will be encouraged to discuss their findings with other nearby student pairs (if the need arises).

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.I will have students who are lower readers pair up with the stronger readers in the class.
2.I will travel the room to listen to the conversations of the student pairs to ensure they are on task and engaged.
3.The character cards add a hands on quality as well.

F. Checking for understanding-

1.During share time, I will ask the different student pairs to share what they learned about classifying animals and how this gives them a better understanding about animals.
2.I will have students complete a reflection in their science journal.
3.They will be expected to write 3 things that they learned about classifying animals and 3 examples of classification.

G. Closure-

1.We will discuss the importance of animal classification and characteristics.
2.I will show a short video in United Streaming about animal classification.
