Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.To be able to tell what the oyster's main role is in the CB.
2.To be know what causes the oyster population to decline.
3.To understand what is being done to help the oyster population in the CB.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Design a power point presentation on the oysters in the CB.
2.Identify what is harmful to the oysters in the CB.
3.Recall the purpose of the oyster and why the Cb benefits from having oysters living in it.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
computer, search engine, power point software, websites that are NGO and GO operated.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Live oysters are in the room to show the students.
2.Shucked oysters and oysters as cuisine are on display.
3.Question that is asked as all students enter is, "Why are oysters 'good'"? Response will be done in lab book.
 

B. Development-

1.Explain how oysters filter water & show video.
2.Review how oysters can be a food source for other species in the CB.
3.Go over population decline and what can be done to help restore oysters in the CB. (Another short video)
 

C. Practice-

1.Debate if the oyster will potentially go extinct?
2.Have the students work in groups to collect pictures of oysters.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Observation to make sure they are understanding.
2.Check lab books to make sure they are documenting their work.
3.Oral feedback and encouragement.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1.Instead of designing a power point they can make a collage.
2.Make a T chart of the pro's and con's of oyster harvesting.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Quiz on the oysters of the CB.
2.Lab book check for completion and understanding.
3.Review power point project
 

G. Closure-

1.Ask how the students feel about the life of an oysters in the CB.
2.Offer them the opportunity to touch the oysters in the tank.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Lab book turn in, and power point completion.
2.Homework is to come back with a 1 page paper on a book they found interesting that pertained to the oysters in the CB.
