Life Sciences- K.2.C. Describe similarities and differences that exist among individuals of the same kind of plants and animals.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Identify, by answering questions, informational text vocabulary such as diagrams and labels
2.Explore and list the parts of a seed and plant on a class diagram
3.Contribute to a class K-W-L chart to demonstrate understanding of the text about plants and seeds
 
5. Materials and Aids-
book- "From Seed to Plant" by Gail Gibbons, wet bean seeds, chart paper and markers, post-its,
drawing paper and crayons, variety of seeds
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Pass around various seeds and ask students questions about them, i.e. What are these? What will they do? Have you ever seen one before? What do you think might grow? What is inside of them?

 

B. Development-

1.As a class, fill in the K part of the KWL chart
2.Ask students what they might like to learn about seeds and plants and complete the W column

 

C. Practice-

1.Read and discuss the book "From Plant to Seed"
2.Complete the plant diagram using post-its and a diagram of a plant
3.Demonstrate how to peel a seed and explore the inside, label the parts on drawing paper
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.Each student will receive a seed to peel and drawing paper to draw their observations
2.Students can copy the words from chart paper to label their diagram
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students can draw and/or write what they observe
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1.Students diagrams will be checked for accuracy. Students will receive a star when finished.
2.Students will be monitored as they peel the seeds and draw, so that immediate feedback and help can be supplied

 

G. Closure-

Students will gather on the carpet and discuss what they learned. The class will complete the L part of the chart together.
 
7. Evaluation-
1.Did all students make a diagram?
2.Did all students contribute to the KWL chart?
