1. Topic-
Galapagos Islands and Endemic Species!
 
2. Content-
The students will be introduced to Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands. The students will learn vocabulary such as endemic, natural selection, species, and archipelago. The students will learn what happens when species are introduced to an area.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Students will be introduced to Charles Darwin and natural selection.
2. Students will be introduced to the Galapagos Islands and many new species of animals.
3. The students will learn more about endemic and introduced species.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Students will understand the difference between endemic and introduced species.
2. Students will learn how introduced animals are endangering endemic animals populations.
3. Students will conduct research on endemic and introduced species in the Galapagos Islands.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
1. Research Materials on the Galapagos Islands.
2. Computer with Internet access
3. Smart Board
4. Pictures of endemic species and the Galapagos Islands
5. World Map clearly showing Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Students will be introduced to the Galapagos Islands.
2. Students will be introduced to many vocabulary words such as adaptation, endemic, species, and archipelago.
3. Students will be introduced to Charles Darwin.
 

B. Development-

1. Students will be shown species endemic to the Galapagos Islands.
2. Students will be introduced to species being introduced to an area.
 

C. Practice-

1. The students will be placed in pairs to come up with ten questions/topics for their research paper.
 

D. Independent Practice-

The students will use computers to research the 10 questions/topics they came up with their partner.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. An ADHD student will be used to hand out all materials and will be allowed to move throughout the lesson.
2. Special Education students can make 5 of the questions instead of 10. They will also have guided help with the computer and research.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Students will be given the choice of presenting their work in front of the class when they are done.
2. The students will hand in their papers for a grade.
3. I will be given them feedback on their work.
 

G. Closure-

After everything is completed, I will engage the students in an active discussion on what they have learned and comprehended.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. The students will be graded on their active participation during the introduction and closure.
2. The students will be observed while working as a pair and while conducting research independently on the computer.
3. The students research paper will be graded.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
I have visited the Galapagos Islands and have many pictures and information so I believe this lesson will be fun and informative for the students. It will also be an excellent introduction to Evolution. When the lesson is complete, I will look to see how I can edit and improve the lesson plan. I will evaluate if anything needs to be added to the lesson.
