Insect/Spider Song or Rap
 
2. Content-
insects, spiders, abdomen, head, thorax, chitin, orb webs, exoskeleton, jaw, fangs, pedipalps, antennae, compound eye, wings, prey, predator
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
Using language arts and music to teach scientific concepts allows students to internalize what they are learning.
 
4. Objectives-
After the teacher reads an example of an Insect Song or Rap and introduces a variety of vocabulary, the students will create their own insect raps using at least 7 insect facts and present them to each other.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
pencils, paper, science journals (to use as a reference), list of vocabulary words
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

The teacher reads an Insect Song or Rap that she's found online or written.
 

B. Development-

The teacher uses the insect vocabulary and notes from her scientific journal to create lyrics for an insect or spider song.
 

C. Practice-

The teacher and class together create more lyrics for the song.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1.The students work in partnerships to create songs or raps about insects and/or spiders.
2. The songs must include at least 7 insect facts.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students who struggle can create shorter songs and be required to include fewer insect facts.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

The teacher will collect copies of the student's insect songs/raps and evaluate them to make sure that 7 actual insect facts are incorporated.
 

G. Closure-

The students present their insect raps/songs to each other.
