1. Topic-
The Food Chain and Animal Eating Habits

2. Content-
Necessities
Herbivore
Carnivore
Omnivore
Food Chain

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Help the students understand the food chain and how it works. As well as introducing the different eating habits of animals
2.To familiarize students with more than one way of knowing how to differentiate eating habits of animals
3.To provide the students with enough knowledge so that they can apply it to our next Science lesson on learning to build our own small examples of food chains

4. Objectives-
1.To get the students interested and to willingly participate in the food chain and animal eating habit lesson
2.To have the students participate and answer questions throughout the lesson in order to retain the knowledge

5. Materials and Aids-
The chalk board with a drawn visual of 2 possible food chains, pictures of different animals, pictures of different foods, flash cards with the words Herbivore, Carnivore and Omnivore

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Inform the class of our new lesson on the Food Chain and Animal Eating Habits
2.Leah introduces the Food chain and how it works. Also, introduces the different categories of herbivore, carnivore and omnivore that animals are put in based on what they like to eat.
3.Next Chayla repeats the meaning of herbivore, carnivore and omnivore and then will proceed to teach the students how to

B. Development-

1.Explain how all living things need necessities in order to live and also discuss what necessities are. Animals can be grouped by what they eat and are divided into three main groups: Herbivores, Carnivores and Omnivores. Explain how the food chain involves every creature in nature and how they can be connected through a food chain. On the board a drawing of what an underwater animal food chain will be demonstrated for a visual.
2.Next explain how animals can also be divided into the 3 main groups by looking at what kind of teeth they have. Herbivores have flat teeth to chew plants and hay, carnivores have very sharp teeth to help them tear through their meals of meat and omnivores have a combination of both flat and sharp because they eat both plants and meat
3.Activity will follow next which will help them apply and practice what they will learn

C. Practice-

1.Students will be divided into 4 groups. These groups will then be given 3 flash cards each that say herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. We will then have pictures of different animals and different foods. When we hold up one of the pictures, the students as a group must decide what category the animal would fall into based on its eating habits and the type of teeth it has
2.The students which hold up the correct answer the fastest will then gain a point. The group in the end with the most points will get bag of candy as a reward for demonstrating knowledge and enthusiastically participating

D. Independent Practice-

This lesson does not have any way of measuring individual progress. That will come in the next lesson on building our own food chains.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Should there be any students in the class with IEP's, they would sit in on the lesson, but would not be expected to fully grasp the entire concept. We would then provide them with different learning assignments for assessment that will benefit the student. In this lesson the students are not given the chance to show their individual understanding yet, but for the next lesson on building our own food chains, there will be accommodations made.

F. Checking for understanding-

We will not be evaluating each individual's understanding at this point. That will come next lesson when we actually begin to create our own food chains to demonstrate knowledge they have gained from this lesson on food chains and animal eating habits.

G. Closure-

1.Repeat the definitions of each of the key vocabulary of the lesson which is necessities, food chain, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore
2.Repeat again the second way of differentiating between animal eating habits by looking at the different types of teeth the herbivores, omnivores and carnivores have

7. Evaluation-
1.Assess their participation in the classroom discussion
2.Assess their responses to questions throughout the lesson and the activity done at the end
