Where Did the Caterpillar Go?

2. Content-
Following the life Process of a caterpillar from the beginning of life through butterfly transformation.

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-

2.Learn about different types of butterflies.

3.Watch a caterpillar grow into a butterfly.

4. Objectives-
1.Students will be able to identify the four different stages of the butterfly lifecycle.

2.State facts about the process of the life cycle.

3.Draw and explain the life cycle of the butterfly.

5. Materials and Aids-
From Caterpillar to Butterfly Big Book (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1) by Deborah Heiligman and illustrated by Bari Weissman.

Learning Resources Inflatable Butterfly Life Cycle

Jar or container with lid

caterpillar at stage one

a small booklet for drawings and writings.

pencils, crayons, colored pencils.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Class can someone tell me what a butterfly is? How about what a caterpillar is? Did you know that a caterpillar and a butterfly are the same insect? This week class we will be learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will be learning about butterflies and watching a caterpillar go through the life cycle into a butterfly.

B. Development-

To begin the lesson we are going to go through the four stages of the butterfly life cycle and read about them in "From Caterpillar to Butterfly Big Book" by Deborah Heiligman and illustrated by Bari Weissman.
Also this will be done by watching a video "The Magic School Bus- Butterflies!" We will then watch the different stages of a butterfly and document what we see in our classroom insect.

C. Practice-

The students will periodically be asked what a particular stage in the life cycle a inflatable or picture is representing as well as being asked about different kinds of butterflies.

D. Independent Practice-

Students will be asked to pick a butterfly and draw the life stages as a mini project and explain a little about it.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Depending on the age and ability of the students the lesson can be modified to more complex or simple. For say a kindergartner they would basically just draw the stages but a second grader would draw a picture and describe the stage.

F. Checking for understanding-

To check for understanding the students will be asked questions about both butterflies and caterpillars as well as shown pictures and objects for them to identify.

G. Closure-

Can anyone tell me "Where did the caterpillar go?" That's correct it did transform into a butterfly. Now can someone tell me the different stages of a butterfly? How about the what is needed in each stage of the life cycle. Great Job class now we know where butterflies come from.

7. Evaluation-
Students will either be required to draw the four stages of the life cycle or draw and describe the four stages. They will also be tested using multiple choice questions about the the life cycle and different butterflies.
