3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter.

4. Objectives-
a. Distinguish between atoms and molecules.
b. Describe the difference between pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures.
c. Describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas states.
d. Distinguish between physical and chemical properties of matter as physical (i.e., density, melting point, boiling point) or chemical (i.e., reactivity, combustibility).
e. Distinguish between changes in matter as physical (i.e., physical change) or chemical (development of a gas, formation of precipitate, and change in color).
f. Recognize that there are more than 100 elements and some have similar properties as shown on the Periodic Table of Elements.
g. Identify and demonstrate the Law of Conservation of Matter.

5. Materials and Aids-

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Students will complete periodic activity from 8/28/15
Students will label their periodic tables
Students will be introduced to their project "Element Cube"

B. Development-

students will explore the periodic table.
Students will follow teachers guide and notes while filling out a periodic table.
Students will research about a specific element and design a cube.
3.

C. Practice-

Students will label and position the elements in order
Students will color and label the individual groups.
Students will get information on the periodic table and the specific parts of an atom

D. Independent Practice-

Students will present a completed periodic table.
Teacher will walk around the room and check students progress

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Co-teacher will work with students. Extra time will be given for these students
Students are given examples along with a guided PowerPoint.
Students will be given more time when needed

F. Checking for understanding-

Students will be graded on a completed periodic table.
Teacher will follow the students progress
Project will be graded for completion and mastery of the element and periodic table
3.

G. Closure-

Students will be instructed to put all materials back and to clean up work stations.
Teacher will close with three questions.
