The Nature of Philosophy/How do we do Philosophy?
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.To establish community of inquiry.
2.A space to share ideas that can be explored in a safe supportive environment.
3.Generate their own guidelines and rules to open a door to philosophical ethics.
 
4. Objectives-
1.Give students the opportunity to formulate rules or principles.
2.Explore norms as a community and agree upon them.
3.Implement guidelines in a classroom setting.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Index Cards, Poster Board, Tape, and Markers.
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

Discuss with the class the purpose of formulating guidelines and rules in a community of inquiry.
 

B. Development-

Explain that there is no right or wrong rule or guideline in which they write down.
 

C. Practice-

In groups determine which rule or guideline they want to represent for that group.
 

D. Independent Practice-

Come up with your own suggestion on a rule or guideline for the classroom. (This should be what YOU think now what you think the STUDENTS or TEACHER want to hear)
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Will be free to help any of those who have a special need.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

The purpose of this lesson is to become a community. Students will be the ones leading this instruction so understanding should be clear and up to them to decide.
 

G. Closure-

At the end of this lesson the class should now feel comfortable as a community.
 
7. Evaluation-
This lesson is an ongoing process. Evaluation can take place in the beginning as far as participation but the observation of the class as a community will be a ongoing process.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
The class should now feel free to express there ways of thinking but at the same time know how to consider views of others. The class is now a community, a community in which they are aware of guidelines and rules and feel comfortable with them. They should know they have the power to come together if something is not working and implement a new rule to make the old one better or eliminate as a whole. The idea is to have them realize that with guidelines and rules that we have in our everyday life does not mean you can not think freely and express yourself.
