Background-
Topics include Africa's Early History, The Kingdoms of Kush and Aksum, The Trading States of Africa.

Key words and people includes but is not limited to savannas, tropical rain forests, jungle, oral traditions, King Ezana, bantu, Swahili and Mansa Musa.
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
Sunshine State Standard S.A.2.4 -
understands cultural, religious, political, and technological developments of civilizations in Asia and Africa.
 
Teacher Objectives-
1. Identify what geographic features of Africa affected human cultures
2. Explain how Kush developed as an independant kingdom
3. Discuss how trade developed along the East African coast
 
Resources-
Powerpoint Presentation
Pictures and visual representations
Video clips including a playing of the trumpet, a traditional african story, and a documentary on nubia
Tangile projects the following week
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

Class will begin with a daily bellwork activity to get them on task and thinking in the right direction. The bellwork question will be

"What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word "Africa"? What types of images come to mind?"

Students will then be asked what they wrote. Their ideas can be written on the board as to get a general idea of what the consensous on Africa is.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

Once students have a general idea of their pre-knowledge on the topic, the lesson can begin. The instructor should begin by introducing Africa to the class as a continent. A visual representation should be given and then any misconceptions given during bellwork should be cleared up before class begins.
 

3. Guided Practice-

At this point, the teacher should give lecture on the topic, explaining all of the relevant material and concepts.
 

4. Student Practice-

Students will be have a chance for independant practice in the form of a project. The project will be assigned at the end of the period and
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. IEP Accommodations will be followed and adjusted
2. Students will be allowed to move at their own pace while maintaining on task and working diligently
 

6. Assessment-

Student's understanding will be evaluated with a quiz and then later on with an exam.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

Students will finish the lesson by reviewing their material and taking an exam. When they are done with their exam, a video will be played that gives an overview of Africa
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Informal evaluation will be completed by questioning students through the lecture for their understanding
2. Formal evaluation will be completed with a quiz on the following class period.
