Who Knew...? Little Known Facts About African American History
 
Background-
This lesson will be an introductory survey on information I gained on my History Connections trip to South Carolina. It will examine: 1)A review of a previous lesson on the 54th Massachusetts 2) An examination of the "Black Arlington Cemetery" 3)Aspects of the Gullah Culture
4) group work for the students to use the ideas learned
 


Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1. To help students to realize that African Americans played a significant role in the Civil War and winning freedom for the slaves
2. To enable students to understand that there is a part of the United States that is still tied to our West African culture as reflected in Gullah. (If time permits)

 
Teacher Objectives-
1. Students will be able to explain the significance of the Beauford Cemetery as it relates to the contribution of black soldiers
2.Students will be able to describe two aspects of the Gullah culture

Resources-
LCD, computer
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. A picture of Beauford Cemetery will be shown with music from the film Glory playing
2. the teacher will ask students questions relating to it
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1. After discussion, lecture/discussion on the cemetery and why it has been called the Black Arlington
2. Memorial Day-what it used to be called and the role the city of Beauford played in it.

 

3. Guided Practice-

1. Group work involving: a)letters from black soldiers during the war b)written description of being involved in the memorial celebrations c) comparisons of the film Glory to actual events

 

4. Student Practice-

1. Students should be able to complete group work
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Teacher will check progress of students
2. students will be involved in peer tutoring, if necessary
 

6. Assessment-

1. Teacher will ask students questions as groups are being observed

 

7. Lesson Closure-

1. Groups will share their findings with the class
