1. Describe the various characteristics that make up places and regions.
2. Discover the characteristics of the region in which they reside.
3. Outline and produce imaginary characteristics of a place of their choice.

3. Have students write descriptive, expository writings about their place.

1. What makes your hometown special and different?
How would you explain your hometown to someone who has never been there?
If you could make your own community, what would it look like?

White & Colored Paper
Coloring materials (eg, crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.)
Large post-it paper (or white board)
Scissors
Magazines

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. What makes your hometown special and different?
2. What are some defining features of your town?
3. Have students brainstorm factors of their town on a white board or large sheet of post-it paper.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1. Explain that every community has different features and those features define that certain area. Discuss factors such as:
-Size (population)
-Rural v. urban
-Economy (ie, agriculture v. industry)
-How one migrates or comes to be an area (settlement)
-Politics
-Physical characteristics (environment and geography)
-Human characteristics
 

3. Guided Practice-

1. Have students break into small groups and explain the features of their home town.
2. How would they express the features of their hometown to a person unfamiliar with this area.
 

4. Student Practice-

GRASP activity:
Goal: Create a plot for a movie
Role: Producer or screen writer
Audience: The general public
Situation: Make a movie with a new kind of community. You must cover all of the aspects of community for this movie to be successful.
Performance: Create a brief description of what the setting of the movie would be like. The situations can be real or imaginary.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

Low readers will have material explained to them.

6. Assessment-

1. Have students explain the community they created.
2. Present in small groups and then to the class.

Format: Travel Brochure
Topic: The place you used for your movie script is a real place! You're a travel agent creating a travel brochure to advertise your community to bring in vacationers.
