Teacher Objectives-
1. Students will be able to articulate the issues surrounding the events of the early Civil Rights Movement.
2. Students will be able to identify the individuals invovled.
 
Resources-

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1.Tell a story of my mothers experiences in an all white school.
2.Let students give examples of unfair practices they experienced
3.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1.Ask their opinion of where they would be if this were 1962
2.Tell them where they might be.
3.Explain Jim Crow laws.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1.Have them use a dictionary and look up words I think might be unfamiliar to them.
2.Write the definitions on a sheet of paper.
3.Look up the words in the thesaurus to see similar words for maximum understanding.
 

4. Student Practice-

1. Give them fifteen minutes to read the first chapter
2.Write what they think will happen next.
3.Write what they would do if they were part of the Logan family.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Ask students if they would prefer to discuss what they think would happen next in a small group.
 

6. Assessment-

1. Sixty minute essay
2.Raise your hand and tell me your favorite charachter so far.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

Explain the importance of the Civil Rights movement and how it effects them today. Ask for questions on anything they didn't understand.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1.Assign a choice of a three page book report for the following week or a presentation to the class. Whichever they choosethey will be given the option to write or act out a scene in the book as if they were the charachter, to show what their reaction would be.
