Standard #1 -Students will gain an understanding of early civilizations and thier contributions to the foundations of human culture.
 
Teacher Objectives-
Objective 1 -Speculate about the factors that led to civilized society.
A -Investigate hunters and gatherers.
B -Explore man's domestication of plants and animals.
C -Examine the role of irrigation in early agriculture.

Objective 2 -Assess the impact of geography on the locations of early civilizations.
A -Examine why early civilizations developed in river environments.
B -Evaluate the diffusion of civilizations.
 
Resources-
Pictures of early tools. Maps that show river valleys where early civilizations were known to live.
 
Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1.Take survey to determine Hunter/Gatherer status.
2.Show pictures of early tools used.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1.Explain what Hunter/Gatherer roles are and what that lifestyle would be like.
2.Draw Pro/Con diagram on the board and have class help determine the pros and cons with the Hunter/Gatherer lifestyle.
3.Explain the domestication of plants and animals and how that changed the lifestyle.
4.Show map of areas where early peoples lived and have class speculate about thier choice of geography.
 

3. Guided Practice-

Give Students a blank map and have them fill in the names of the rivers and mountain regions as well as what modern day country the early civilzation would be in.
 

4. Student Practice-

Homework assignment to go home and list plants and animals that could be used for food around the students neihborhood. This will show how dependent we are on domesticated plants and animals.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

Instead of a written quiz an oral interview will be given by the teacher.
 

6. Assessment-

Pop Quiz will be given at the end of class.
 

7. Lesson Closure-

Emphasize the contributions that early societies made and their relevance.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
Quiz will be given at the end of the unit.
