Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
To learn how Latitudinal and Longitudinal lines are used to locate specific points on a map. |
Teacher Objectives-
1. Student will be able to identify various hemispheres
2. Student will be able to identify Latitude and Longitude lines on a map/globe
3. Student will be able to use coordinates to locate a point on a map. |
Resources-
1. Inflatable globe
2. Map Reading Activities - Activity 3 at http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/DE/k9mod/Mapskill/mapskill.html

5. Homework handout
6. Projector |
Teaching Methods-
1. Lesson Introduction-
Review with students the Map Gridding system that was learned last week, 9-27-10.
(5 Minutes) |
2. Lesson Progression-
1. Hand out Map Skills vocabulary words
2. Explain that Latitude/Longitude system is a type of gridding system used to find points on a larger map.
3. Use the Map Skills Activities - Activity #3 website to teach students about hemispheres, lat/long, and how coordinates are plotted.
4. Have students take turns answering the practice questions in the Map Skills Activities - Activity #3 presentation.
(30 minutes) |
3. Guided Practice-
Do the "Where Am I At Seaworld" slide-show game and let students take turns answering the practice questions.
(20 minutes) |
4. Student Practice-
Hand out homework lat/long grid, and have students fill in the blanks for the various coordinate points. |
5. Learner Accommodations-
6. Assessment-
Ongoing assessment during participatory class activities with continued explanation and question answering |
7. Lesson Closure-
Review main concepts and vocab words with students
