Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1.Trapped Chilean Miners in the San Jose Mine, Chile. Students will get a brief description of the trapped miners and will be asked to watch a video of the miners to see what kinds of items were given to the miners to survive.
 

2. Lesson Progression-

1.A brief discussion on what influences human behavior and development.
2.Students will fill out worksheet on Physical Environment, Cultural Environment and Social Environment.
 

3. Guided Practice-

1.The students will break down the "List of Custom Areas Found in Most Cultures" into the three environments.
 

4. Student Practice-

1.Students will be placed into groups of 4 or 5 and given a survival dilemma. There are three dilemmas: in open water, on the moon, and in the desert. The students will be asked to rank individually and in group consensus which articles listed below the dilemma they would put in order from 1 "most important" to 15 "least important."
2.Once students have ranked all three dilemmas the answers will be taken up.
 

5. Learner Accommodations-

1.Doing group work will allow students who have difficulties staying on task.
2. The dilemmas are fun so it should be easy to accomodate all abilities.
 

6. Assessment-

1."We have undergone a couple of survival situations ourselves, how did our physical/social/cultural environment shape our decisions?"
2. "Let's look back at a real situation. What about the Chilean miners? How has Chilean culture, society, or physical environment shaped the miners ability to survive?
 

7. Lesson Closure-

1."What forces shape human behaviour?" Social, cultural, and physical environments.
2."Why is this important?" Because these forces influence the decisions we make and its important to be able to understand how we are molded by them to make us who we are.
 
Measuring Student Progress-
1. Students will write a short essay for homework.
