Expected Outcome Of This Lesson Plan-
1.To produce a spreadsheet to organize and evaluate information.
2.To identify characteristics of the regions of the United States.
3. TO evaluate and utilize resources to gain data and information.
4. To use function options to calculate sums and averages on compiled data.

Teacher Objectives-
1. The students will create a spreadsheet organizing information about the regions of the United States.
2. The students will identify essential characteristics of each region the United States.
3. The students will evaluate and utilize resources for validity and research.
4. The students will accurately utilize the function options to organize data on their spreadsheets.

Resources-
Computer Workstation
Microsoft Excel
SMART Board
Internet
Teacher-created resource list
Rubric
Fourth grade Social Studies Text
Collection of information books about the regions of the United States
Teacher-created question worksheet

Teaching Methods-

1. Lesson Introduction-

1. The teacher reviews the regions of the United States and the states that make up each region.
2. The students brainstorm a list of characteristics that distinguish and describe each region. (For example: population, climate, landforms)
3. The teacher discusses how the sum fuction and the average function can be used to organize and evaluate dat.
4. The teacher gives the students a rubric and discusses each criteria.
5. The teacher assigns the students to groups.

2. Lesson Progression-

1. The teacher uses a previously-created spreadsheet on the SMART Board to demonstrate how to use a spreadsheet to organize data.
2. The students add data into the spreadsheet when asked by the teacher.
3. The teacher demonstrates how to use the sum fuction and average function keys.

3. Guided Practice-

1.The students use the teacher-created resource list and rubric to collect data and information from the given sources.
2. The students complete the spreadsheet with information from their research.
3. The teacher monitors the students' progress and lends assistance as needed.

4. Student Practice-

1. The students use the sum function and average function to organize their data.
2. The students answer questions on the teacher-created worksheet using the information found.

5. Learner Accommodations-

1. Hetrogeneous groupings
2. Step-by-step directions for the assignment and how to use functions
3. Leveled resources
4. Strategy sheet for researching on the teacher-created resource sheet

6. Assessment-

1.The students wil make an inference about the region they have been assigned using the information they have found. They will put this on a "Ticket to Leave" slip and hand it to the teacher.
2. The students will also write the steps to find the average using a spreadsheet on the "Ticket to Leave" slip.

7. Lesson Closure-

1. The students will turn and share 2 facts learned with their neighbors.
2. The pairs will be asked to share what they have learned from each other with the class.

Measuring Student Progress-
1.The students will be evaluated using the rubric provided.
