Grade: First Year Dental Hygiene
1. Topic-
Periodontology - Analyzing Radiographs

2. Content-
benefits and limitations of dental radiographs when assessing the patient's periodontal disease, identify radiopaque and radiolucent objects on an x-ray,identify alveolar bone, periodontal ligament space, cementum, type of x-rays needed to evaluate bone levels, cortical bone, lamina dura, cancellous bone

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Upon completion of this course the student will be perform a complete assessment of a patient's periodontal disease.
2. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to identify periodontal landmarks on a full mouth series of x-rays.

4. Objectives-
1. After reading the required text book chapter and lecture session the student will be able to accept the importance of being able to analyze and interpret dental radiographs in accessing the patient's periodontal disease.
2. Given a full mouth series of x-rays the student will be able to identify normal and abnormal height of bone, alveolar crestal bone, periodontal ligament space, and lamina dura with an 85% accuracy.
3. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using radiographs in helping determine a patient's periodontal disease with an 85% accuracy.
4. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to classify radiographs that are the most beneficial in determining the patient's periodontal disease with an 85% accuracy.
5. Given a set of four bitewings the student will be able to distinguish between horizontal and vertical bone loss with greater than 85% accuracy.
6. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to list the proper sequence of early radiographic periodontal changes with an 85% accuracy.
7. After reading the required textbook chapter and lecture session the student will be able to compare types of bone loss radiographically.
8. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to critique one FMX with an 85% accuracy.
9. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to describe furcation involvement, describe how to detect and measure furcation involvement, and identify teeth with furcation involvement with an 85% accuracy.
10. After reading the required textbook and lecture session the student will be able to classify furcation involvement on radiographs with an 85% accuracy.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1.Introduce myself, briefly talk about my background in dental hygiene, and the degree completion program.
2. Talk about How previous lessons relate to today's lecture.
3. Talk about the importance of today's lesson to their career as a dental hygienist.

B. Development-

1.Use PowerPoint to present lecture on Analyzing Radiographs.
2. Students will have a lecture hand out with some fill in the blank areas
3. The Following areas will be discussed: why are radiographs important to the assessment of a patient's periodontal disease, benefits of x-rays, limitations of x-rays,review radiopaque and radiolucent objects on x-rays, landmarks that are identifiable on x-rays, periodontal changes not seen radiographically, types of x-rays and what ones are better for evaluating bone levels, cortical bone, cancellous bone, alveolar crest in health, lamina dura in health, periodontal ligament space in health.

C. Practice-

1. Students will be grouped in pairs. Each pair will get a FMX series of x-rays. Half the class will do x-rays numbered 1-9 and the other half will do x-rays 10-18. The students will be given 10 minutes to complete the activity.
2.Review the activity as a class

D. Independent Practice-

1. Students will be able to keep the FMX to review. Student's will also be given a copy of the answers to the activity after the activity is completed and reviewed as a whole class.

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

If the students complete the activity prior to 10 minutes they can complete the other half of the FMX that they were not assigned.

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Ask students if they have any questions
2. During activity walk around and check for understanding.

G. Closure-

Review key points: Benefits and limitations of x-rays, the importance of content to their future careers as dental hygienists. Review types of bone, aleveolar crest, periodontal ligament, lamina dura, best x-rays to evaluate bone loss, normal bone height.

7. Evaluation-
Have students complete evaluation.

8. Teacher Reflection-
Was there enough time in lecture to cover all content?

What were the benefits of the activity?

What were the limitations of the activity?

Did my teaching style match students learning style?

What would I do next time differently?

What were the advantages of this lecture?
