Clinical Patient Prophy/Exam Appointment
 
2. Content-
Health History, Vitals, Initial exam, Intra/Extra Oral Exam, Dentition Charting, Periodontal Probe Charting, Deposit Class, Caries Risk, Proficiency
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1.Upon completion of this clinic session, the student will understand how to receive consent from instructor to provide treatment on clinical patient.
2.Upon completion of this clinic session, the student will understand how to develop a treatment plan for a clinical patient after assessment and initial exam.
3.Upon completion of this clinic session, the student will understand how to correctly use skills/concepts learned during a proficiency exam.
 
4. Objectives-

1. Identify at least 2 medical conditions and any red flags on patient's medical history that may require denying treatment. (If none, student will identify this)
2. Assess patient's periodontal, caries, and deposit class using assessment and pass initial exam with at least 75% accuracy.
3. Demonstrate knowledge and actions learned during different proficiency exams assessed by instructor with at least 75% accuracy.
 
5. Materials and Aids-
Encounter form, Dirty Sheet (IO/EO exam, periodontal charting, dentition chart, caries class, deposit class), proficiency sheets, Blue Pen for Instructor
 
6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

I am here today as a student instructor. I will be signing health histories, completing initial exams, and grading proficiencies as students need. (2 min)
 

B. Development-

1. Students will bring patient back to clinic and have patient update medical history and take blood pressure reading. (5 min)
2. Students will look over medical history and discuss red flags/ medical conditions (medications) with patient. (3 min)
3. Students will obtain signature and consent to start treatment on patient from clinical instructor. (2 min)
4. Students will assess patient and complete an intra/extra oral exam. (5 min)
5. Students will complete periodontal charting, dentition charting, caries risk classification, deposit classification, periodontal classification, ASA classification, plaque score. (10 min)
6. Students will have instructor do an initial exam on patient and instructor will grade student on accuracy of findings. (5 min)
7. Students may start taking radiographs, or scaling dentition.
8. Students may want to complete proficiency exams. Instructor will grade as student completes. (5-10min)
9. Instructors will do quadrant checks, and assess students' clinical skills with exploring for missed deposit. (5 min)
10. Instructors will complete overall grade for student when patient prophy/exam are completed. (5 min)
11. Instructor will grade SOAP notes.
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will work independently on clinical patients. Students will be working at different paces and will complete patients in different clinic sessions. They will take radiographs that are graded by the clinical dentist. They must achieve a passing grade to continue onto completing the initial exam. Initial exam is graded, and treatment plan is designed. Instructor will sign off on treatment plan and can start scaling patient's dentition. Student will be evaluated on missed deposit and final polish/floss. (2 hours)
 

D. Independent Practice-

Students will have opportunities to complete several clinic proficiencies needed as a part of their whole clinic V grade.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

Students that do not have a patient will help in sterilization room, or help other students chart, develop radiographs, etc.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

1. Instructor will be available for questions students may have throughout the clinic session.
2. Instructors will monitor students throughout clinic session for ethics and professionalism.

Students will share experience of clinic session. Will share any questions or difficulties encountered. Student can discuss with instructor concepts learned throughout session, and ideas on ways to improve for next time.
 
7. Evaluation-
Students who instructor evaluated their health histories, completed initial exams, or graded proficiencies will complete an evaluation form provided by student instructor.
 
8. Teacher Reflection-
Did student feel instructor was fair in grading process?
Did the clinical patient feel instructor was confident in knowledge presented?
Did student feel intimidated by instructor?
Did student have confidence in self?
