The course provides instruction in continuing information of fundamental
principles of clinical dental hygiene, periodontal assessment, periodontal
treatment planning, and case assessments. |

3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
|
1. Upon completion of DHYG 202L, student will be able to deliver
preventative, educational, and therapeutic services to the public
at a competent level.
2. Upon completion of DHYG 202L, student will be able to provide comprehensive
care involving an assessment of patient needs, planning for treatment
and disease control, implementation of various clinical dental hygiene
services, and an evaluation of both the patient and operator efforts
and the result to a competent level.

4. Objectives-
|
1. Upon completion of this clinic, the student will be able to collect,
record, and analyze patient assessment data such as: medical/dental
history, intra/extra oral exam, vital signs, indices, and periodontal
and dental assessment at a competent level.
2. Upon completion of this clinic, the student will be able to verify
the need for x-rays and recall proper radiograph techniques at a competent
level.
4. Upon completion of this clinic, the student will be able to identify
patient's AAP classification, plaque and bleeding index score, calculus
location and difficulty at a competent level.
5. Upon completion of this clinic, student will be able to determine
the course of treatment for the patients specific classification to
a competent level.
6. Upon completion of this clinic, the student will be able to apply
debridement and scaling procedures for patient care at a competent
level.
7. Upon completion of this clinic, student will be able to explain
each instrument's function and the area use in the mouth at a competent
level.
8. Upon completion of this clinic, student will be able to interpret
xrays to a competent level.
9. Upon completion of this clinic, student will be able to formulate
a treatment plan for their patient to a competent level.

5. Materials and Aids-
|
Dental Clinic, Dental clinic pod with associated equipment, blood
pressure cuff and stethoscope, PPE, Loupes, computer, digital xray
with sensors, patient documentation and chart, patient visuals for
POH, pen, over gloves |

6. Procedures/Methods-
|
A. Introduction-
1. Introduction of myself and some background information on me
(5 min)
2. Answer any questions students have before starting (5 min)
3. Go over student' patient's medical history and dental chart (if
not new) (5min) |

|
B. Development-
1. Student's bring back patients and start assessments-medical and
dental history, dental charting, periodontal charting, IO/EO exam
and charting, bleeding index, plaque index, occlusion, calculus detection,
AAP classification, and treatment recommendation. (30-60 minutes)
2. Instructor will provide check-in, where instructor will reassess
patient and review students documentation to document student's competency
for grading, determine baseline and student accuracy, and to ensure
patient's safety. (20-30 minutes)
3. Student will provide treatment for patient including any or all
of the following: pre-procedural rinse, POH, education and counseling,
instrumentation, local anesthetic, sealants, chemotheraputics, polishing,
fluoride. (60-120 minutes)
4. Instructor will evaluate treatment done by student and grade student
appropriately. |

C. Practice-
1. Students will be working individually in their pods with their
patients.
2. Instructors will be available in pod area to assess students work
and answer any questions.
3. Dental Assistants will be available for charting. |

Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-
When students have dismissed their patients, disinfected their pods,
and reset their pods they are free to go |

|
Checking for understanding-
1. During the instructor check-in, the instructor will be evaluating
students assessments and planning knowledge.
2. During instructor checks, instructor will test student's knowledge
to ensure they are knowledgeable in the concepts of their assessment-to
why they have assessed their patients as they did, to why they used
the instrument that they did, so on and so forth.
3. During instructor check-out, instructor will be assessing students
ability to scale and provide according care and/or education to patient. |

Closure-
1. After students have finished with their patients, they will insure
all documents are completed, and then walk their patient to front
desk.
2. Students will then disinfect their pods and reset them for the
next clinic.
3. Student will fill out a evaluation form for the instructor. |
