The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
 
2. Content-
Rules, protection of identifiable information, individuals rights, enforcement activities, and how to file a complaint.
 
3. Goals: Aims/Outcomes-
1. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the key privacy aspects of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) at a competent level.
2. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to apply HIPAA Privacy Standards at a competent level.
3. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize Patient's rights in regard to HIPAA at a competent level.
4. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to identify PHI (Protected Health Information) at a competent level.
5. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to differentiate between consent and authorization at a competent level.
 
4. Objectives-
1. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the key privacy aspects of HIPAA and describe at least 2 key privacy aspects of HIPPA at the end of the lesson.
2. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to apply HIPAA Privacy Standards throughout the duration of their career with 100% accuracy.
3. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize Patient's rights in regard to HIPAA by the end of the HIPPA lesson at a competent level.
4. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to identify PHI with 80% accuracy at the end of the lesson.
5. Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to differentiate between consent and authorization with 80% accuracy at the end of the lesson.

6. Procedures/Methods-

A. Introduction-

1. Introduce and share a little bit about myself. (2 min)
2. Start with a question. How many students have heard of HIPPA, how many have not? (2 min)
3. Ask a second question. Why is HIPPA important? (3 min)
 

B. Development-

1. Use PowerPoint to deliver content on HIPPA
2. Student will follow along with notes provided from the PowerPoint.
3. Discuss the key privacy aspects of HIPPA.
4. Application of HIPPA privacy. (20 min)
5. Discuss patients rights related to HIPPA. (5 min)
6. Discuss patient consent. (5 min)
7. Discuss patient authorization. (5 min)
 

C. Practice-

1. Students will be given an example of an acceptable HIPPA discussion to consider and ask questions if needed
2. Students will be given an example of a non-acceptable HIPPA discussion to consider and ask questions if needed.
3. Students will discuss consent and authorization with the class.
 

D. Independent Practice-

1. 10 point multiple choice quiz will be completed at the end of the lesson provided by myself for evaluation.
2. Instructor will include HIPPA questions on the next exam.
 

E. Accommodations (Differentiated Instruction)-

1. I will allow students to explain HIPPA to other students if they have the knowledge.
2. Student who have experience with HIPPA will be encouraged to share their stories.
 

F. Checking for understanding-

Instructor will be able to elaborate and guide students in understanding HIPPA when working with patients throughout the duration of their time at SCTCC.
 

G. Closure-

1. Review the major concepts of HIPPA.
2. Discuss the short 10 question quiz to be completed. (5 min) If the instructor allows completion of the short quiz that day we will allow 10 min.
 
7. Evaluation-
1. Have students complete the evaluation on learning (5 min)
2. Assess the 10 point quiz after completing my lesson on teaching.
